Week 14 – Watch a Movie

Not just any movie, we were asked to watch one of four movies:

    October Sky
    Rudy
    Door to Door
    Cool Runnings

Door to Door

I found Door to Door in 7 parts on youtube and my husband and I watched it together.

I explained to him that we were looking for four things:

    Definite Major Purpose
    Positive Mental attitude
    Personal Pivotal Needs
    Plan of Action
    Persistence
a definite plan, expressed in continuous action

When we were done watching the movie we discussed what we saw in the movie. Really, each one of these things was in that movie. Bill Porter knew what he wanted, he stayed positive and he went after what he wanted. Nothing could stop him. He was determined, persistent and patient.

It was truly inspiring and well worth watching. Great movie and full of lessons. Patience and persistence are the most prominent… tons of other little tidbits sprinkled throughout the movie.

October Sky

We decided to watch another movie. I know, the assignment was to watch one movie… but we found October Sky for free on Netflix movies to watch Instantly and we decided to watch it.

Same things to look for as the other movie… and like the other movie, this movie had all of those things. Homer Hickam was definitely persistant. He knew what he wanted and he went after it. He had his own personal needs… he knew what they were and he stayed aligned with his values.

This is a great movie for every child in the world to see. Too often children (and adults) give up on their dreams and decide to do something because they have to and not because it is their dream.

Follow your dreams… that is the real lesson.

I have one more video to share. This is one of my favorites… and I hope you enjoy it too. Please comment below and let me know what you think of it!

Great point Heather. What if every child sat down with their families and watched these four movies? As parents, teachers, and mentors, you can be the shining examples of what it truly means to follow your dreams. Your own family MMA:-)

Great post, Heather! Watching 2 movies instead of 1. Thanks for putting video clips of each. I did not realize the movie Door To Door was about Bill Porter. I remember the story of Bill Porter! Most inspiring man and story!! Thanks for sharing!

Wow I loved that success video at the end! I have seen it once before in the past, but it had completely been forgotten. I just finished watching Rocky last week. I’m not a big TV person, but I was sick with strep throat and so the TV and the couch were my best friends for a few days. When Rocky Balboa is talking to his son and telling him that it’s about how hard you can get hit and then get back up and cowards give up and he’s not a coward…that brought tears to my eyes. It’s so very true! Last year really hit me hard and this new year is bringing excitement to my eyes. I felt as though Balboa was talking directly to me. Thx for sharing that!!!

Heather, it is great that you were able to sit down and watch these movies with your family. You never know the impact of small things. Thank you for sharing the other motivational video. It really showed several examples of people we know who have become great examples of success because of their passion and love for what they do.

Thanks for posting that video at the end, I needed a view of that this morning. Darling Richard Branson – so successful, yet too British to let rip. I know people who have worked with him; he’s a great boss and has a chilled attitude, yet is ruthless when it comes to bringing his ideas into fruition. He lets nothing stand in his way. I want to cry with overwhelmed gratitude like that sportsman holding his forehead to his trophy. Cars, houses and champagne are great, but nothing compares to that.

Heather, I really enjoyed your post! Thanks for introducing those films to me… it’s nice to know a little of what they’re about and that they’re worth watching.
I thoroughly enjoyed your motivational clip and went through it twice!…. particularly liked what Tyler Perry, Steve Jobs, Robert Kiyosaki and the “Rocky” character had to say. Thanks for including that!
I really like “The Starfish Story” from your previous blog, and hope that you’re feeling a bit stronger now. All the best! ~Mark.
